Marta Kostyuk is continuing her ascent to the top of worlds tennis with another strong victory over Kaia Kanepi at the Chicago Women's Open 6-2 6-4.
Marta Kostyuk is having a breakout season in 2021 with the Ukranian slowly but surely making her way into the top 50. Initially known as a strong clay courter Kostyuk is proving in 2021 she is adept at playing on all surfaces. Another strong performance came in Chicago against Kaia Kanepi.
Kanepi a seasoned veteran who played inspiring tennis in Australia earlier this year was no match for Kostyuk who quickly found a way to deal with her opponent. It was 3-0 for the Ukrainian after the first 3 games and Kanepi never recovered in the first set.
6-2 was the final score in the set for Kostyuk who played well across the board even saving all three breaks point she faced. She continued to do the same in the 2nd set yet this time faced much more resistance for Kanepi. After squandering 3 break points Kanepi went down 1-3 but fought right back to make it 3-3.
In the end Kostyuk found a way to break Kanepi at the best possible time to make it 5-3. From there the Ukranian remained calm and served out the match 6-2 6-3. A great performance by the Ukranian who is picking up form before the US Open.
