Barbora Krejcikova and Nikola Mektic triumphed in mixed doubles at the 2020 Australian Open after defeating Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Jamie Murray.
While Mattek-Sands & Murray played already 5th Grand Slam tournament, it was a first-time together for Krejcikova & Mektic. However, the duo was doing very well as during their premiere they managed to reach the final in Melbourne. For Mattek-Sands & Murray, it was already 3rd Grand Slam mixed doubles final where they could have added their 3rd Grand Slam title in mixed doubles.
En route to the final Krejcikova & Mektic defeated Peschke & Koolhog, Anisimova & Kyrgios, Kichenok & Bopanna and
Dabrowski & Kontinen.
Mattek-Sands & Murray lost a set only to the first-seeded pair Strycova & Melo in the first round and then they were flawless against Ostapenko & Paes, Zheng & Vliegen and Sharma & Smith.
Krejcikova & Mektic entered the final ideally when they got a break in the very first game and got a 5-3 lead later. However, Mattek-Sands & Murray managed to win 4 games in a row to win the first set 7-5.
In the second set, Krejcikova & Mektic led 5-3 again but this time they did not lose their lead anymore. They managed to win the set 6-4 to force the decisive super tie-break. There, they lost only one point to win it 10-1 and became 2020
Australian Open champions in mixed doubles.
