A couple of exciting matches happened on day one of Adelaide with
Petra Kvitova beating Elena Rybakina and
Danielle Collins doing the same against Pliskova.
Kvitova made her start in 2023 at the United Cup and she won both matches there. It was not enough for the Czech Republic to move on but she played some great tennis and it continued in Adelaide. Taking on a pretty solid Rybakina, Kvitova was able to establish control from the baseline and her ball striking proved too much for Rybakina to handle.
She won the match in two sets improving to 3-0 in 2023 and it's a welcome sight after a disappointing 2022 year. Joining her on her the winners list for the day was Danielle Collins who powered past Pliskova. The American had an amazing run last year in Australia and she's playing some good tennis once again.
Collins took the ball really early in this one and Pliskova was unable to put her imprint on the match. She rarely does well when pushed to defend and it happened here again. A superb performance from Collins who is hoping for another strong showing during the Australian summer. So far so good.
