Petkovic defeated no.6 Kvitova in the second round of the US Open. The quarterfinalist from the 2011 will play Mertens in the 3rd round.
Kvitova was not in an ideal form at all after dropping out in the last 16 at Wimbledon. Since then she played
only one match in Cincinnati, which she lost to Sakkrari. Although in the first round she won from fellow countrywoman Allertova in two sets, the second round was the last stop in Flushing Meadows for the Czech.
The two players had a history of 10 matches. Petkovic took the lead after winning the 6th match and will meet Mertens in the next round. After the match she said:
“In the past two weeks I’ve been really good with my mental state,”
Petkovic said. “I’ve been trying to stay in the moment and play point by point, enjoy the time I get to spend on this beautiful court and it’s been really working for me, so I’m glad. There were ups and downs throughout the match but I was there in the most important moments.
“I feel so happy. I think Petra is one of my favorite players and people on Tour. It’s always so tough when I play against her and I’m so happy.”
