A couple of notable seeds are out of Wimbledon today with native Katie Boulter beating last year's finalist Karolina Pliskova 3-6 7-6(4) 6-4 and Rybakina beating Andreescu 6-4 7-6(5).
Bianca Andreescu played in the Bad Homburg final last week showing a very high level on the grass. SHe's generally played on a very high level for a couple of weeks but today things simply did not work out. It was similar to the final in Germany, she was okay but never quite right.
Rybakina did a lot of damage with her serve to give herself a lot of free points. She dropped only a handful of points behind the first serve and hit more winners than Andreescu. The Canadian broke Rybakina when she served for the match at 5-4 but failed to complete the comeback in the tiebreak.
The more impressive upset was that of Katie Boulter who came back to win against Karolina Pliskova. The Czech player played in the final last year and hoped to go even further this year with no Barty in the draw. However, she stumbled once again against Boulter. The Brit beat PLiskova last week in Eastbourne and she was able to do it again.
Pliskova was pretty solid early on winning the opening set 6-4. In the 2nd one, Boulter finally started hitting her shots and she was up a break twice in that set. She held neither time and needed the tiebreak to get things done. She was the braver player and it paid off. The final set featured strong play by both but eventually, the attacking player of Boulter paid off as she closed the final set 6-4.
