After taking a hiatus since Indian Wells in October, US Open runner-up
Leylah Fernandez will finally be making her return to the tennis courts in preparation for the 2022
Australian Open.
The 19-year old has been named on the entry list for the Adelaide International 1, a WTA 500 event that will run from January 3-9, 2022. Fernandez joins a star-studded field that already includes World No.1
Ashleigh Barty, 2020 French Open champion
Iga Swiatek and recent WTA Finals winner
Garbine Muguruza.
The event will also feature American sensation Coco Gauff, Swiss No.1 Belinda Bencic and Grand Slam champions Sofia Kenin, Petra Kvitová and Victoria Azarenka.
Fernandez is hoping to build off her success at the 2021 US open, where she stunned the world to reach her first Grand Slam final. The Canadian has never made it past the first round at the Australian Open, competing at this year's event as a qualifier.
