Leylah Fernandez got her Charleston Open campaign underway with a good start beating Rodina 6-3 6-2 in the first round of the WTA 500 event.
Fernandez hasn't been playing that well this year or rather she hasn't been able to keep a high level for a long time. The Canadian showed a very good level at times but she simply can't string together a couple of good matches. Either it's a rather quick exit following the good match or she simply drops out in the first round.
This was a good start for her but it won't mean much if she isn't able to keep up the good play shown today. The first set opened with an early break by the very aggressive Canadian and that's how she likes to play her matches, with a lead. Confidence grew with each passing game and she won it 6-3.
The second set opened with an early break and then she added another one for the 4-0 lead. She would then go on and finish it off with a 6-2 in the second set. A good win for Fernandez considering the recent struggles with her form.
