Leylah Fernandez took part in a media day ahead of the San Diego Open where she was asked who her favourite players to watch on the WTA Tour are. The Canadian admitted she was unsure. "I don't know. It's a little hard because I'm watching tennis with kind of like a competitors eye, so not really much as a fan.
"So, sometimes when I watch tennis, I'm watching it to analyze each player's game, my game, to see what I can do against them so it's a little hard right now to say which player gets me excited to keep watching."
Men's game
While it's understandable why Fernandez cannot allow herself to fully appreciate the ability of her rivals due to the competitive nature of the sport, watching the ATP Tour means she can marvel at the excitement certain players on the men's side bring. "But on the men's side, that's a little bit easier because I'm not going to be playing against them," said Fernandez.
"It's always exciting to watch [Carlos] Alcaraz play, how he brings the intensity, the variation he gives his opponents. And then also
Novak Djokovic and
Andy Murray."
The 21-year-old reserved special praise for the Scot's fighting spirit. "Andy Murray has gone through so much the last couple of years and the way that he just keeps fighting and finding a way, like it's always entertaining to see what he does next."
