The action on the outside courts continues to provide with both expected results and some surprises at the 2024 French Open on the women's side with Leylah Fernandez through to a tie with Ons Jabeur.
Fernandez carried on where she left off against Xiyu Wang with the 31st seed taking down the Chinese ace 6-3, 6-4 to reach the third round where she will face Ons Jabeur. The Tunisian seems to be finding something, but of course has not been at her best all season. So the potential is there for the Canadian to have a run.
She has had a pretty poor European clay court season and a lot of the time has failed to get out of the second round winning one game then losing the next. So is stringing together a run at the right time in Paris. They also sit in Iga Swiatek's section at the top of the draw which has opened up in her favour this afternoon.
Swiatek will face Marie Bouzkova next who saw off Jana Fett this afternoon. The winner of that tie will face Anastasia Potapova or Xinyu Wang. But it is in fact the section below which would've been a potential Quarter-Final that holds the cards. Olga Danilovic earlier this afternoon got rid of Danielle Collins who many see as the big threat to Swiatek in the draw. Not anymore.
Danilovic will face off against Donna Vekic with the winner facing Chloe Paquet who took down Katerina Siniakova against Marketa Vondrousova who is the fifth seed. But she isn't in the best form with Katie Volynets forcing a deciding set out of the Czech ace.
It has also opened up for Fernandez and Jabeur today with Jelena Ostapenko being dumped out by Clara Tauson. The Dane has her best win in some time in a 7-6, 4-6, 6-3 in a three set tie with just over two hours for the latter to seal the win. She won't be a thorn in the side of Swiatek this tournament and after a great start to the season has flattered to deceive since then. A former champion falls and now Tauson faces Sofia Kenin. The American continues to get better and saw off Caroline Garcia yesterday. The winner faces Fernandez or Jabeur so an opportunity is there. But similarly it strengthens Swiatek's potential draw further after her Naomi Osaka scare.
