Leylah Fernandez was cruising in her match against Aliaksandra Sasnovich at the Rome Open but an epic 3rd set meltdown saw her throw away a 3-0 lead losing 6-7(4) 6-3 3-6.
It has not been a very good year for Leylah Fernandez as the Canadian has been largely struggling with her tennis. She's about one year removed from her ankle injury but she's far from the form she was showing at Roland Garros when she got injured. Madrid was an early exit and now Rome is too.
She lost her serve early in the first set but managed to break back when Sasnovich served for the first set. We ended up in a tiebreak in which Sasnovich was able to win 7-4 but the second set was played much better by Fernandez. She was able to take it 6-3 thanks to some really solid play overall.
That continued in the final set as she took an early break and then added another break to take a 3-0 with a chance to make it 4-0 with a good service game. She dropped her serve and that started an epic meltdown which finished with Sasnovich winning six games in a row closing out the match 6-3.
