In a battle of one-time WTA champions, Maria Camila Osorio Serrano got beaten Leylah Fernandez who became a two-time WTA champion.
It was a match where Fernandez had all the control but threw it away multiple times. In the first set Fernandez proved better early against an erratic Colombian who barely avoided a two break deficit by holding for 1-4. Eventually, Fernandez was up 5-2 but she threw it away and we were tied at 5-5. The first set was decided in the tiebreak with Fernandez having an early 3-1 lead.
She threw that lead away and made some questionable calls down the stretch losing it 7-5. In the 2nd set Fernandez finally took advantage of an injured Osorio Serrano who did not play too well to start the match. Fernandez was up 4-1 with two breaks but the Colombian fought her way back. She almost broke back at 5-4 but Fernandez saved three break points to win the game and the set.
She opened up well in the 3rd taking an early break from Osorio and coming fairly close to winning the match. However, another poor game and she threw that lead away. A couple of more poor games and she found herself down 4-1. It was a mess from Fernandez who was simply making terrible decisions in the crucial rallies.
Eventually she calmed down and battled back to make it 4-4. Osorio kept applying pressure and had 5 match points in total but Fernadez saved all of them. In the tiebreak it was Fernandez who played better winning it comfortably.
