Liudmila Samsonova win 2022 Pacific Open Tokyo over Qinwen Zheng

The 2022 Toray Pan Pacific Open was won by Samsonova who proved better than Zheng 7-5 7-5 in the final to win the 4th career trophy.

It was the fourth final for the Russian and her 4th successful win improving to a 4-0 record in finals. It was the maiden final for Zheng and she played well but ultimately the Russian simply proved a bit more consistent.

Samsonova has been playing superb tennis in the last couple of weeks and this is the 3rd trophy she won this year and the third in two months. Something has been going really good for her and she was always considered the favourite in this one. Both of them play a very similar style with good serving and attacking play but Samsonova has been doing it longer.

Zheng started off better and had some early chances to jump out to a lead but after Samsonova established a good rhythm, the Chinese player stopped seeing chances. The opening set was decided towards the end of the 7-5. Players traded early breaks in the second set but eventually, it was the Russian who proved more consistent down the line.

It was a close match but a few moments determined it. Both of them will move up in the rankings and both will be ranked inside the top 30 tomorrow.
