Great Britain could not utilise their underdog status against the mighty Czech Republic team in the quarter-finals of the
Billie Jean King Cup Finals, losing both singles rubbers as their hopes and dreams fade in Shenzhen in a 2-0 loss.
Marie Bouzkova fought off a valiant Sonay Kartal in three sets, setting the tempo of the tournament. Linda Noskova then stepped up and disposed of British No.1 Katie Boulter in straight sets. With Karolina Muchova and doubles specialist Katerina Siniakova not even used, the Czech Republic managed to rest two of their greatest assets ahead of the rest of the event, in which the British team will not be featuring.
Bouzkova strikes the first blow
It was a first time on court since Indian Wells for Kartal,
who was out for a number of months with a back issue. She looked good on court
after a long hiatus but was not able to get over the line against Bouzkova, who
defeated her 7-2(2), 4-6, 6-4.
The World No.26 is the third highest-ranked player from the
Czech Republic and was drafted to play with Muchova, lined up to be in the doubles
clash that would never occur. She was in a spot of bother early on when Kartal
raced out of the blocks into a 2-0 lead, but instantly she was back on level
terms.
Nine consecutive holds later, a tiebreak was called upon.
Bouzkova bossed proceedings, winning it comfortably 7-2 with Kartal on the back
foot. That was until she again started a set really quickly, breaking in the
first game. That would prove to be pivotal with no more breaks in the set. Kartal
came close to wrapping it up against the serve but would complete it on hers with
a crucial third set needed.
For the third time in a row, it was the Brit to break first,
Bouzkova responded in rampant fashion, winning the next four games and sailing
into a 5-2 lead. Kartal could not afford any slip-ups and managed to save three
match points en route to getting the set back on serve. It was short-lived, with
Bouzkova breaking to love, abolishing the good work previously completed to
send the Czech Republic 1-0 ahead.
Linda Noskova was up next, and would confirm her country's place in the semi-finals
Noskova sees off Boulter to end Great British hopes
It was a tall order for Boulter to get anything off Noskova.
The Wimbledon champion had recently pushed Aryna Sabalena all the way in the
quarter-finals of the US Open and is becoming a powerhouse in the sport. Boulter suffered after a slow start, making the second set competitive but ultimately losing 6-2, 7-6(3).
The signs were there from the off that Noskova would be too
strong for Boulter. Three tight games went the way of the 21-year-old who would
hold to love to lead 4-0. Four holds of serve later, Noskova had a one-set
lead.
The second set was a lot closer and had a lot of tension around it. If Boulter lost, that would be the end of Great Britain's
Billie Jean King Cup hopes for another year. It was relatively routine holds for the most part. That was until at 4-4, Noskova seemed to be making a late dash to the finishing line. She went 15-40 ahead, but the two break points were saved by a Boulter, to the relief of her team.
She led 5-4 and 6-5 on serve but created no set-winning opportunities, thus confirming a tiebreak. The damage was done early as Noskova piled on the pressure, leading 3-1 and 5-2. Boulter had no response as the Czech booked her country's spot in the semi-finals.
It was not to be for Great Britain in the end. Despite no Emma Raducanu, they boasted a strong team that just could not stand up to the force of the Czech outfit. They did not even get to use the doubles World No.1 Siniakova, who was set to partner up with Muchova in the doubles against Harriet Dart and Jodie Burrage. The victors will either play Kazakhstan, without World No.1 Elena Rybakina, or Spain next.
