Martina Trevisan needed over three hours to upset
Maria Sakkari but she got it done by staying competitive and playing more stable tennis down the line 6-3 6-7(4) 7-5.
It was a crazy match in every sense of the word because it had everything. We saw plenty of twists and turns in this match as well as some spectacular play by both players. They both wanted to win it badly as they played for their countries and it showed. Trevisan stunned Sakkari with a pretty strong level in the opening set taking it 6-3.
It wasn't a good set by Sakkari as she struggled with her serve, leaving her quite vulnerable on serve. She also failed to play consistently enough from the baseline, certainly not as a good as Trevisan. The second set was a proper crazy one. Sakkari played a bit better but still not that great overall.
Trevisan was up a break 2-0 early but then she dropped her level allowing Sakkari to take a 5-3 lead. She failed to serve out the match and we ended up in a tiebreak. A furious series of points towards the end of clinched it for Sakkari 7-4. The final set was a great one as well. Once again it was Trevisan up a break early but Sakkari battling back.
Eventually Trevisan proved a bit more steady while Sakkari smacked the ball a bit to carelessly with the Italian taking the final one 7-5.
