Alex Eala had a clear message for those questioning her physical condition after another demanding stretch on the WTA Tour. The Filipina addressed the subject during her press conference at the Hong Kong Open, delivering a pointed response while reflecting on a season that has taken her to a career-high world No. 17.
The Filipino defeated the Australian Emerson Joens in straight sets in the first round of the Hong Kong Open. The 21-year-old has enjoyed a breakthrough campaign, establishing herself among the leading players on the tour and attracting considerably more attention from fans and the media.
However, Eala rejected the suggestion that fatigue should automatically be viewed negatively. Rather than treating it as a sign that something is wrong, she explained that being tired can reflect the work she has put in.
Her response came after reaching a career-high ranking of No. 17, another milestone in a season that she described as extraordinary.
"Being tired is a blessing": Eala turns criticism into a positive message
Asked about suggestions that she has looked tired during recent tournaments, Eala did not shy away from the discussion. Instead, she challenged the premise behind the criticism, pointing to her ranking and the number of matches she has played as reasons to view the situation differently.
"My year has been amazing. It's been incredible. I don't want to get too into it yet. I feel like if I get too into it, it'll become quite emotional because of the year I've had. You know, I'm still in the tournament, I'm still motivated to go as far as I can here. But my year has been absolutely incredible, and I'm so grateful for everything that I've been through."

She then addressed the comments about her physical condition directly, making the point that reaching such a high position in the rankings while dealing with the demands of the tour is not something she considers a negative.
"I guess maybe that's the opinion of some, like you said, but I hit my career high this week, guys. If I'm tired and I'm 17 in the world, that's great.
"Being tired is a blessing as well. Being tired means that I've been working hard, I've been having lots of matches, competing a lot. Being tired means that I'm healthy enough to work, I'm healthy enough and in a healthy mindset to put myself in these situations of pressure.
"Yes, I think I'm doing great, guys!"
Eala's schedule has involved more matches and greater exposure than in previous seasons, while her ranking progress has placed her in increasingly competitive situations. For her, the fatigue associated with that process is inseparable from the opportunities she has earned.
Eala explains her connection with Hong Kong and reflects on breakthrough season
The press conference also touched on the personal side of Eala's growing profile. Hong Kong holds particular significance for the Filipina, who has competed there since she was young and continues to feel a strong connection with the city.
"Being here feels very much like home. I've been coming here since I was young, and there's a huge Filipino community. Everyone is so welcoming and hospitable, so it's always a special place for me to come back to."

That connection has become even more meaningful as her success has attracted support from Filipino fans around the world. "It's one of the biggest honours ever. It makes me want to hug them and say thank you for the support. It makes me feel like people really see me for who I am. I think, at the end of the day, it's more important than how I play. It's who I am."
The comments offered another indication of how Eala views her growing influence beyond the tennis court. While her results have brought her recognition, she also values the personal connection she has developed with supporters, particularly within the Filipino community.

On court, she acknowledged that there are still areas of her game she wants to improve, including her effectiveness at the net. "I'm feeling good. I think it's the end of the year, so nothing out of the ordinary. I'm healthy, I'm happy, so super blessed."
For the moment, Eala’s focus is on her second-round match against Tereza Valentova. The Czech player leads the head-to-head 2–0, with both previous encounters having taken place on hard courts and ending in straight sets.

- Don't you just love this young lady!? We fans often expect athletes to be supermen and superwomen, often forgetting that they WILL GET TIRED! I love Alex's perspective. Tiredness for an athlete should never be viewed as a negative, especially if you are healthy, taking care of your body and mental health and putting in the work. What a mature perspective. Good for you, Alex!Rapunzel05-11-2026
- Jess is absolutely correct! But the disrespect is a trait I have noticed in most of the Russian players. Mirra is good but very immature and lacks humility. Conceivable needs to get a handle on that!Rapunzel05-11-2026
- Having spent weeks and weeks through the years on tour, I can say with confidence that Conchita was (is) one of the very few who realize the surprising level of maturity (and sometimes lack of) which Mirra seems to have developed in such a demanding adult world of Pro-Tennis. While at the same time reminding herself (Conchita, that is) that Mirra is still young and developing mentally and physically. The general public may forget at times, or not at all realize, these modern era young athletes do not have a 'normal' Youth. It's a major sacrifice, among countless sacrifices, these athletes must make. People who blow-off that fact are ignorant and unfair when they blurt out, "They choose fame so they have to put up with the intrusions on their lives". No, they do not.
mandoist05-11-2026 - Okay... someone with a camera was EAVESDROPPING on a private conversation. Shouldn't that be the point of discussion here? Regardless of the sensationalist crap by media, Pegula (and anyone) has a right to an opinion. There used to be an expectation that private conversations were respected, regardless of 'stardom' and whatever other defensive excuses media tries to shove in our faces. Boo-hoo if feelings are hurt. BTW: Having been employed at various tourney venues, etc., I can't tell you how nasty and offensive players can be when discussing their opponents and colleagues... in "private". Well, I could, but won't. I also challenge anyone to deny what Jessica said is false.
