OFFICIAL: Muguruza and Badosa out of Spain’s BJK Cup Finals team. Big blow on their chances. Only player expected to play BJK and WTA Finals in singles (and doubles) is now Barbora Krejcikova.
Having two top 10 players in the Billie Jean King Cup is a luxury that the Spanish team had over others. It is why many are considered to be the favorites among the Czech nation who plays in front of native fans in Prague. However, it was not meant to be, as Muguruza and Badosa have pulled out of the event. The reason is a rather simple one, personal gain.
Both of those players were able to qualify for the WTA Finals in Guadalajara taking place from November 1st till November 6th. The Billie Jean King Cup Finals come right after from November 10th till November 17th. The long season is clearly a factor as well with players not wanting to risk injury or simply looking for a break.
Such a short turnaround and the long flight from Mexico to Europe is also another factor. When the news broke about them pulling out Badosa released a statement on Twitter writing:
"I am sorry to announce that I will not be with the Spanish team in Prague. It hurts me to make the decision because of the calendar. I have all the hope to be in the future in the team and to live great moments together with everyone. This time I will have to cheer from a distance. Good luck, girls!"
