After becoming world number 1 in 2017, Muguruza was not so successful during the 2018 and 2019 season. However, she kicked-off 2020 in a style reaching the final at the Australian Open after defeating Simona Halep.
The Spaniard kept a high-level of the service during the match as she hit 10 aces. In the first set she had already a 5-3 lead, but then she went on to lose 10 points in a row and give Halep 2 set points. But the Romanian was not able to convert them and so the tie-break decided the first set.
There, Halep had another 2 set points which she did not convert. But Muguruza was successful in converting her 3rd to win the first set 7-6(8). In the second set, it was Halep who led already 5-3. But she did not handle the pressure well when serving for the set at 5-4.
Muguruza managed to win another 2 games after leveling the score to take the second set with a 7-5 victory. The Spaniard became the second finalist in Melbourne as she will meet Sofia Kenin in the final. The American disappointed home crowd-favorite Ashleigh Barty with the same results as Muguruza outplayed Halep 7-6 and 7-5.
