Garbine Muguruza played a very good match against 2020 runner-up Victoria Azarenka to defeat her in 3 sets 6-4 3-6 6-3.
It was a very good battle between Azarenka and Muguruza with the Spaniard emerging victorious in the end. The match was a roller coaster affair that saw several big momentum swings in the match as both players had moments of brilliance. Players traded early breaks in the opening set after which they both settled.
Muguruza was the player playing a bit better and she was able to break Azarenka late in the set to give herself the 6-4 opening set win. The 2nd set was played abysmally by Muguruza who could not hit a first serve to save her life. She quickly fell behind 0-4 and at that moment only hit 23 % of her first serves.
She stabilized a little bit pulling a break back but the damage was already done and Azarenka was able to win that match set 6-3. An exciting third followed with both players barely avoiding early disaster. Both Muguruza and Azarenka had several break points early but neither found the breakthrough.
For Muguruza the serve was working a lot better and she was able to set up quick points. On return, she played some amazing points as well breaking Azarenka to take a 5-2 lead. The Belarussian collapsed after that losing her serve once again to end the match with a 2-6 final set finish.
