Ashleigh Barty found herself in a very difficult situation at the
Miami Open but found a way to win the match and move to R3.
Reaching the 3rd round was a tough task for Barty who found herself down 5-2 in the 3rd set againast and inspired Kucova. The Slovakian player seemed to be on a roll in the 3rd but a late push by Barty made the difference. Post-match Barty said:
"Never give up, never ever give up. You’re always in there with a chance."
She certainly believed in that as she kept battling on and even seemed to enjoy it. She admitted as much after the match saying:
"Today was really hard work, and I enjoyed every single minute of it. There’s nothing like coming through a test like that, and now I get another opportunity in a couple of day's time to play another tough match, and test myself again."
The defending champion had to save a match point in the match which she did with a forehand winner. It was a timely winner in an otherwise shaky match that featured a lot of unforced errors by Barty who has not played in over a month. Asked what that particular point meant to her:
"Oh, just more than anything is that we never give up. No matter what the result, no matter what we're feeling, no matter the conditions, we just never give up.”
She will face Ostapenko in the next round for a very interesting match between two players who like to play aggressive so it should be a great match.
