While
Paula Badosa will fly the flag for Spain this week at the
Billie Jean King Cup Finals, Garbine Muguruza who has been a leading light for Spanish tennis in recent years continues to take a break from the sport.
Badosa believes it is no coincidence that this is the case with multiple players also deciding either through pregnancy or just the rigours of the tour to take a break.
This has seen Ashleigh Barty retire and not return at 25, Naomi Osaka struggling mentally on tour before she became a mother and also players on a different note in Cancun not happy with the state of the tour and more mandatory tournaments also being added. She spoke about that as such saying that more and more weeks get added which inevitably drags players down.
"It's not by chance," Paula Badosa said. "It is no coincidence that you see Ashleigh Barty retiring at 25, Naomi Osaka [four-time Grand Slam champion] going through a mentally difficult period. Then Garbine Muguruza… It is no coincidence. This is a very demanding sport in which we are forced to play more and more weeks and you are very exposed. It doesn't surprise me."
