Marketa Vondrousova kicked off her Chicago campaign with a strong win over qualifier Gleason 6-2 6-0.
For Vondrousova this was only her 2nd match since the Olympic Games where she shockingly took home the silver medal. The decision to take part in the WTA 250 event in Chicago was purely out of a need for playing time ahead of the US Open and today was a good match.
The Czech player faced break points in the first game of the match but settled on a time to win the game. After that, she went on a rampage winning three more games to make it 4-0. In the next four games, the serving player did not win the game with Vondrousova winning the set 6-2.
Gleason did not win a single service game she played in the first set as Vondrousova exploited her rather weak serve for this level of tennis. The 2nd set continued more or less the same domination by Vondrousova who showcased her superior skill repeatedly.
Rather quickly it was 4-0 for the Czech player and she finished it off with a 2nd set bagel 6-0. Interestingly enough Gleason did not win a single service game in this match which is probably a record of some sorts albeit not one you want to hold.
