For the 2nd time in a row, Ons Jabeur will play in the Wimbledon quarterfinals after taking down Elise Mertens 7-6(9) 6-4.
It won't be easy winning Wimbledon for Jabeur but then again neither was this matchup against Mertens. The Belgian is a noted doubles specialsit who can move forward and do some volleying if need be. She did that in this match and it gave Jabeur quite some trouble at times. The first three games in this match featured breaks which is nothing unusual when Jabeur plays.
Her matches are always great fun and she is a very streaky player that can go from abysmal to great in minutes and the other way around even quicker. After holding that break for a few games Mertens was able to battle back and make it 4-4. We went into the tiebreak and there Mertens missed a golden opportunity. She was up 6-3 with several chances to close it.
She squandered five set points in total in that tiebreak allowing Jabeur to come back and take it 11-9. After that, Jabeur shined on the court full of confidence after that majestic comeback. The Belgian somewhat expectedly dropped her level a little bit. The Tunisian finished it off with 6-4 for the quarterfinal.
