Naomi Osaka and Diego Schwartzman have been awarded US Open Sportsmanship Awards which were presented to the players who best demonstrated the best sportsmanship throughout the whole series of events.
Osaka in particular was well known for her tie against Coco Gauff and her
interview afterwards which went viral; for Todd Martin, co-chair of the US Open Sportsmanship Award Selection Committee he saw their contribution as even more impressive than their performance on the court.
"Naomi and Diego are both tremendous competitors and athletes, but at this year's US Open, and throughout the entire summer; they have demonstrated a level of sportsmanship that is even more impressive than their play on the court," said Martin.
"We are incredibly pleased to present them with this year's US Open Sportsmanship Awards; and thank them for being true role models and inspirations for all those that play the game."
Osaka tweeted that she donated the money to the Red Cross; to help relief efforts in the Bahamas and thanked Mastercard for matching the donation.
Tennys Sandgren also weighed in on this in hilarious fashion saying about his tie against Schwartzman; 'What sportsmanship? Didn't even let me get more than 4 games a set.'
