Japanese superstar Naomi Osaka has achieved a lot in her young career, and the 24-year old added a new accolade to her growing list of accomplishments on and off the court as she was honored with the 2021 BET Sportswoman of the Year award.
BET honors the best and most successful athlete of the previous year with the Sportswoman of the year award, with Osaka finally claiming the title in 2021.
Osaka outperformed Serena Williams, the woman who holds the record of maximum wins in this category. After receiving the award, Osaka shared her happiness with her fans on Instagram and wrote, “look what finally came. Ngl, this is really cool. I used to watch this every year with my mom and sis.”
The former World No.1 has been nominated twice before in the years 2019 and 2020 for the award. However, owing to her Grand Slam title in 2021, she finally claimed the trophy.
Osaka has been a recipient of several awards in the past, winning the Associated Press female athlete of the year in 2020. She was selected by a panel of AP sports editors for her active involvement in protest against racial injustice and police brutality.
Furthermore, she also took home Sport's Illustrated Sportsperson of the Year award after winning her second US Open title in 2020. Subsequently, the ESPY awards recognized her as the best female athlete and best female tennis player in 2021.
