Paula Badosa withdrew from the Miami Open due to an undisclosed injury, while Alexandra Eala made history by reaching the quarterfinals of a WTA 1000 event for the first time in her career. The 19-year-old becomes the first Filipina to reach the last eight of a tournament at this level.
Eala received a wildcard to enter the tournament, boasting a prominent junior career as the 2022 US Open junior champion, and she continues to take her first steps on the WTA Tour.
The 19-year-old has reached her best ranking so far, appearing as World No. 102 in the live rankings, just a step away from the Top 100. Eala advances directly to the quarterfinals and awaits the winner between Iga Swiatek (No. 2) and Elina Svitolina (No. 22).
As for the Spaniard Badosa, she once again struggles with injuries. Just a couple of weeks ago, she withdrew from Indian Wells before her debut against Caroline Dolehide due to a recurring back injury. For now, it is unknown whether her back is once again troubling her or if it’s a new injury.
