World no. 67 Paula Badosa revealed on Thursday that she tested positive for the coronavirus while serving the 14-day Melbourne quarantine, feeling symptoms and moving to a health-hotel.
The 23-year-old Spaniard is the first player to have had a Covid-19 test result return positive in the Melbourne bubble. Earlier, there were reports of two players have tested positive, but it later emerged that the test positives were on account of virus shedding.
Paula gained almost 30 positions on the WTA list in 2020, reaching the Australian Open second round and the last 16 at Roland Garros in October for her best result at Majors.
"I have some bad news. Today, I received a positive Covid-19 test result. I'm feeling unwell and have some symptoms, but I'll try to recover as soon as possible listening to the doctors. I have been taken to a health hotel to self-isolate and be monitored. Thanks for your support. We'll be back stronger."
