Paula Badosa wins Sydney Tennis Classic over Krejcikova

Paula Badosa captured her first trophy in 2022 with another strong performance in Sydney, defeating Krejcikova 6-3 4-6 7-6(4).

Both Badosa and Krejcikova played some amazing tennis to reach the Sydney Tennis Classic final. Both players play a very similar type of game that consists of a very powerful serve setting up points for them. Both enjoy hitting the ball hard and both are capable of doing it at a high level like today. We saw plenty of great rallies and winners with the start of the match favouring Badosa a little bit.

She took an early lead with Krejcikova fighting back. After taking another 5-3 lead, Krejcikova finally was unable to counter and lost the first set with 3-6. The start of the 2nd set featured a dropoff from Badosa who allowed the Czech player to take an early 3-0 lead but it was not enough. Badosa found a way to battle back even taking the 4-3 lead before Krecjikova battled back once more.

A furious finish to the set with some spectacular rallies saw the reigning French Open champion win it 6-4. The start of the 3rd set was interesting as the players traded breaks due to some iffy serving. After that, it was a clinic by both as neither allowed a single break point for the remainder of the match. We saw powerful serves on both sides and points were finished quickly.

It had to be settled in the tiebreak and Badosa proved slightly better especially towards the end of the tiebreak. Her baseline play was simply more consistent in the crucial part of the match and that won her the trophy.
