Top-ranked American
Jessica Pegula advanced to the third round at the 2023
Australian Open on Wednesday, battling past
Aliaksandra Sasnovich on Rod Laver Arena.
Pegula recorded a 6-2 7-6(5) victory over her Belarusian opponent, as she resumed her quest to claim a first Grand Slam trophy. The American capitalized on Sasnovich's weaker second serve, applying pressure to obtain an early break. Although Sasnovich was able to break back, it was not enough to stop Pegula's onslaught, as the American raced through the opening set.
Sasnovich's service woes continued in the second set, as the World No.38 hit three double faults and won a third of points behind her second serve. However, the 28-year old was able to match Pegula, as both ladies again exchanged multiple breaks, leading to a tiebreak. It was here that Pegula's experience under pressure prevailed, allowing the American to dictate play and close out the match after an hour and 31 minutes.
Already a favorite to win this event, Pegula will look to hope to have an easier time in the third round when she faces the winner between Aussie wildcard Olivia Gadecki and Ukrainian Marta Kostyuk.
