Petra Kvitova avenged her Birmingham defeat to Haddad Maia by beating the Brazilian in Eastbourne snapping her active 13-match winning streak 7-6(5) 6-4.
Haddad Maia won three titles on grass this year with two singles and one doubles and entering this match, the Brazilian had an active 13-match winning streak. She played unbelievable tennis for almost three weeks beating every opponent fairly routine. She finally ran out of steam against Kvitova who needed an impressive showing to defeat her.
The opening set was played well by both. Both dominated play on their serve and there weren't many chances for either player. Eventually, as it usually goes in matches like these, we ended up in a tiebreak. It was closely contested but Kvitova took more risk and eventually it paid off for her.
She used that momentum early in the 2nd set to secure the only break in the match taking a 2-0 lead. From there it was largely cruise control for the former Wimbledon champion who did not allow many break points on her serve. A thoroughly impressive performance against Maia who obviously ran out of energy after three long weeks.
