Karolina Pliskova continued her impressive mid-season run, as the
Wimbledon finalist overcame
Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova to advance to the quarterfinals of the 2021
US Open.
The World No.4 required an hour and 35 minutes to score the 7-5 6-4 victory, employing her precise groundstrokes to move her Russian opponent around the court. The Czech star was efficient on Monday night, hitting 24 winners while winning 83% of points at the net.
Conversely, Pavlyuchenkova was unable to handle the power produced by her opponent, as she struggled to engage in lengthy groundstroke battles. This led to the World No.15 committing 34 unforced errors, while only able to produce 19 winners. Her performance was not enough to overcome the fourth seed, who is hoping to finally add a Grand Slam title to her name.
Pliskova will face the winner between
Maria Sakkari and 2019 champion
Bianca Andreescu, who are set to battle for the last quarterfinal spot.
