Ukraine and Italy will meet again with a place in the Billie Jean King Cup final on the line — the exact same semifinal draw as a year ago, in the exact same city. Shenzhen has hosted the Finals for a second consecutive year, and for a second consecutive year, it is Elina Svitolina’s team standing between Jasmine Paolini’s two-time defending champions and a shot at a three-peat.

Last year’s version of this tie went the distance and finished 2-1 to Italy, with Paolini beating Svitolina in three sets to level it before combining with Sara Errani to win the decisive doubles.

Both teams arrive at this rematch having needed all three rubbers again just to get here, which makes Saturday’s tie feel less like a formality for the champions and more like a genuine coin flip. The winning team will advance to Sunday’s final, where Linda Noskova and Karolina Muchova’s Czech Republic are already waiting.

Italy needed a proper fight to see off host nation China in the quarterfinal. Elisabetta Cocciaretto was thrashed 6-0, 6-2 by Zhang Shuai, an alarmingly one-sided opening rubber that put the two-time champions in an immediate hole. Ukraine's route was just as dramatic. Anhelina Kalinina gave her team the early lead with a 6-7(6), 6-1, 6-1 win over Jana Otzipka, but world No. 7 Svitolina was then stunned by Greet Minnen, ranked 217th, 6-7(5), 6-4, 6-4 — only the second top-10 win of Minnen's career and her first since Wimbledon four years ago. It again came down to the doubles, where Kalinina and Lyudmyla Kichenok beat Magali Kempen and Lara Salden 6-3, 6-3 to send Ukraine through.

Cocciaretto vs Kalinina: an opener already in doubt

In practice, Cocciaretto’s performance against Zhang Shuai was bad enough — a bare 6-0, 6-2 scoreline — that it would not be a surprise to see Italian captain Tathiana Garbin make a change before Saturday.

Lucia Bronzetti or even teenager Tyra Grant could be plausible alternatives if Garbin decides she needs a different look at the top of the order. Kalinina, for her part, arrives with real momentum and the security of already having delivered a rubber for her team this week.

The two players have never faced each other, although Kalinina’s current ranking of No. 48 is higher than Cocciaretto’s No. 67, while the Italian has also dealt with injuries over the past year. Both are former Top-30 players, making confidence a particularly important factor, and Kalinina enters the tie with the momentum advantage.

Paolini vs Svitolina: the key duel

The tie’s most important individual match, on paper and in practice, is Paolini against Svitolina. Her victory over Zheng Qinwen, who had recently reached the US Open quarterfinals, was further evidence of that. When Paolini plays for Italy in the Billie Jean King Cup, she has consistently found a higher level, and she will need it again against Svitolina.
