Former footballer Michael Owen had the best of intentions as he
posted a tweet congratulating
Emma Raducanu for her win at the SPOTY's however his tweet was widely mocked.
Yet the generous sentiments of the ex-Liverpool and England striker backfired as a stream of replies mocked the tweet, with Twitter users suggesting Owen was trying to raise his profile on the back of the success of the tennis superstar.
Cheeky Twitter users responded to Owen’s tweet with a wild array of
messages suggesting they had also claimed big prizes over the course of
their careers, with all very much tongue in cheek as they delighted in
poking fun at 2001 Ballon d’Or winner Owen.
At the end of the long thread with multiple funny replies, Raducanu capped it off with:
"Never normally see things online but was just sent the funniest thread… you are too funny out there"
Owen saw the funny side of it as well writing:
"Haven’t tweeted for a few days as been busy reading all the hilarious replies to my tweet to Emma Raducanu."
