After the drama caused by
Emma Raducanu last month at Wimbledon surrounding her withdrawal from mixed doubles, the Brit seemed to aim a dig at Judy Murray in an exchange with
Frances Tiafoe.
Raducanu withdrew from the mixed doubles with Andy Murray in what would've been his final match at SW19. Judy Murray then caused a stir when asked about the withdrawal of Raducanu, she said 'yes, astonishing'.
Judy Murray though then went on to insist that it was referring to the organisers' decision to have the duo play together the evening before Raducanu was due back on court to face Lulu Sun in what was a losing effort in the end.
Raducanu at the time said that she hadn't seen any of the fall out of the decision to withdraw as she tends not to look at social media during tournaments. However it seems like she has done since after being asked to play mixed doubles with Frances Tiafoe.
Tiafoe wrote under Raducanu's post about her win over Elise Mertens at the
DC Open in Washington: "Mixed..." to which Raducanu responded saying "astonishing" with a laughing emoji referencing that quote.
Judy Murray after making the comments and receiving widespread social media criticism also for reposting a video of Murray and Serena Williams when they teamed on her socials backtracked. "Not sure anyone understands sarcasm these days. Pretty sure the scheduling (4th match court 1 with a singles following day) will have played a major part in any decision making," she said.
But it seems to have at least got to Raducanu who aimed for a more light hearted approach with the American who also plays in Washington this week. She will next be in action on Wednesday when she takes on Peyton Stearns. The American won through last night in a steely display as ever from the Rabat champion and in a battle between two rising stars of sorts (despite Raducanu being a Grand Slam champion), it is certainly one to watch.
