Recognition from the greatest: Rafael Nadal congratulates Alexandra Eala after historic DC Open title success

Alexandra Eala's maiden WTA title at the DC Open has not gone unnoticed in the tennis world. It has been a long and gruelling journey to the top, but on that route was a stop at the Rafael Nadal Academy who moulded her into the tennis player she is now. 22-time Grand Slam champion Rafael Nadal has closely watched her progress, and was quick to congratulate the 21-year-old after her incredible achievement.

It was a stacked lineup in Washington, but Eala had the necessary tools to barrage her way through. Wins over Qinwen Zheng and reigning champion Leylah Fernandez was followed by a second win over Elina Svitolina in two months.

Naomi Osaka was halted in the semi-final in brilliant fashion, setting up a very tough test against the former winner and number one seed Jessica Pegula, who was in her fourth final of 2026. She took the first set on a damp and rainy finals day, forcing proceedings to be pushed over to the next day.

All of these obstacles were expertly traversed, even better than her more experienced opponent who was left in her dust after a ruthless bagel confirmed the title in emphatic style. Eala was very emotional at the end after the realisation of what she had achieved just sunk in. Another moment of history for her country supported by a number of them in the stands.

It was a tough decision to leave her childhood home and move to Mallorca at the age of 13, but it was the sacrifice chosen to be made after Eala was determined to continue her tennis career in a bid to make it to the top.

Her coaching and development in the Rafael Nadal Academy has proven to be hugely influential with her now a serial winner on the WTA Tour. Now debuting in the top 20, she is a force to be reckoned with as her game continues to come on leaps and bounds over a short period of time.

Going back to her roots, Nadal has been very complimentary of the Filipina. He has even returned to the court briefly to have a rally with her and has closely tracked her progress. This DC Open title is the latest milestone, and the most special, for Eala and was deserving of recognition from Nadal.

On X, he wrote: “Congratulations Alexandra! What an incredible week in Washington. A well-deserved title given the hard work. Congratulations to the Philippines and the whole Academy team!"

There is the sense that this is only the start of the journey for Eala. Time will tell if she can continue this upward trajectory in the future and win even bigger titles in a bid to become one of the best on the WTA Tour.

She could continue this in the upcoming tournaments. She can reach even loftier heights with some wins at the Canadian Open and Cincinnati Open, defending virtually no points in those events. Following that is the big one: the US Open. Eala got her very first Grand Slam win at Flushing Meadows last year, and will be one of the most popular figures competing in the fourth and final Grand Slam of the year, culminating a North American hardcourt swing that has already been very productive.
