Britain’s young tennis star has reportedly lost a major sponsor.
The 21-year-old was once regarded as the next big thing, especially after
winning the US Open at the age of just 18 back in 2021. The most impressive aspect
of her performance in that competition was the fact that she started the
competition through the qualifying round and still managed to go all the way
and lift the title.
While doing that, she became the first player in the history
of tennis to win a Grand Slam despite starting the competition through the
qualifying round. That triumph helped Raducanu get many big deals from sponsors, but it seems that she has lost one of them.
According to the report by English media outlet Daily Mail, the former world number 10 has lost British Telecom's sponsorship for demanding ‘too much money’. This news is definitely not great for Raducanu, who is also set for a ranking drop after deciding not to take part in the upcoming
Stuttgart Open.
The one-time Grand Slam winner’s most recent outing was at the Miami Open, where she had a good run, but it eventually ended after losing in the quarterfinal to the 2024 US Open runner-up America’s Jessica Pegula with a score of 6-4, 6-7, 6-2. Talking after that result, Raducanu stated that despite
the result, she believes she will be taking a lot of positives back home. At that
time, she also stated that she was unsure of what her plans would be going forward.
"Despite losing today (against Pegula) I can take some
good positives from this week and look forward,” she said. "I think I just
need to take a beat and kind of reevaluate what I'm doing. This week it was
good but I need to kind of just figure things out and then I'll make a plan
from there."
