Main draw play gets underway today at the WTA Madrid Open 2025, as the spotlight shifts to the red clay of the Spanish capital. With nearly one million euros on the line for the champion, fans can expect a thrilling start to the first WTA 1000 event of the clay-court season.
A host of notable names will grace the courts on opening day, including former World No. 1 Naomi Osaka, British No. 1 Katie Boulter, and rising star Alexandra Eala. While some top seeds won’t begin their campaigns until Wednesday, today’s action promises plenty of drama as players battle for a spot in the second round.

Naomi Osaka vs Lucia Bronzetti: Former No. 1 returns to action
Possibly the highlight of the day will be the match between four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka against Italian Lucia Bronzetti. The Japanese starts her clay-court season in 2025, in a campaign in which she has had little continuity. The physical demands of clay pose an extra challenge for Osaka, who needs to get more minutes on court.
With a 9-4 record, Naomi Osaka has shown flashes of her best tennis and faces a tour that has historically been her Achilles heel.
Bronzetti, ranked 59th in the WTA, is not at her best. The Italian has a 9-11 record in 2025 and has yet to win on clay, losing in both Charleston and Rouen.
Last season the 2 previous clashes between the two took place, with Naomi Osaka winning both in the first round of Roland Garros 2024, as well as in the debut at the China Open 2024.
