It was a thrilling final between two very good doubles pairing but it was Sabalenka & Azarenka that came out on top. The duo are not doubles partners usually but they have decided to pair up in Berlin as they both played singles. The duo will need the practice time as they will play for Belarus at the Olympics as well.
Melichar and Schuurs proved better early breaking the Belarussian and winning the opening set 6-4. The 2nd set was decided late as Melichar and Schuurs faltered at 6-5 giving the set to Azarenka and Sabalenka 7-5. We went into a decider where Azarenka and Sabalenka proved much better winning it 10-4.
Speaking about the pairing ahead of the event Azarenka said:
“We both brought a different level, mindset than a few years ago. It was important to play together to feel each other’s game, see what we can try, apply what works, what we can work on. Our priority is singles, but it’s a great opportunity at the Olympics to team up."
