Ugo Humbert had an unbelievable week in Halle defeating several notable names en route to the trophy.
The Frenchman won 3rd career trophy at the
NOVENTI OPEN and his first ATP 500 trophy. It was an amazing performance all week long including the final in which he defeated world number 7 Andrey Rublev in straight sets. After the match he said:
“It is incredible. It is the best victory of my career. I am very proud because it wasn’t easy. I was a little bit tired, but I tried to stay focused on each point, and did what I could, so it is very nice."
Humbert had a clear plan ahead of the match which is to shorten the points not allowing Rublev to establish himself in the rally. He admitted as much:
“I tried to stay aggressive and take the ball early because in the baseline rallies it was tough because Andrey was hitting the ball very hard. Physically, it was tough, and I tried to take my chances when I could, and I won.”
Humbert improved to a 3-0 record in ATP finals after this trophy and moved to a career-best ranking of 21.
