The 3rd Grand Slam of the year, Wimbledon is due to start in 8 days and they announced a cut to the prize pool by 5 % compared to the 2019 edition.
The most famous tennis event in the world Wimbledon is returning in 2021 after not being played in 2020 due to the pandemic. Compared to the 2019 event it will feature a cut prize pool by 5 %. Prize pools at events have been down across the board so this is not anything out of the ordinary.
The All England Lawn Tennis Club (AELTC) said on Wednesday that the Wimbledon prize fund stands at £35m ($49.4m), with singles players battling for a first-place prize of £1.7m, 28 per cent lower than two years ago. The announcement was followed by a statement:
“As in previous years, and particularly in this challenging year for tour players, the focus of distribution has been on supporting players in the early rounds of the tournament."
