The first match of a rain-plagued day one at Wimbledon is over and Aryna Sabalenka is through to R2.
The Belarussian player played a strong match from start to finish winning 6-1 6-4 in 77 minutes of play. Sabalenka arrived at Wimbledon as the only top 20 seed to never reach a QF at a Grand Slam and expectations were high. Sabalenka possesses a game suited for grass but her movement is not the best on the surface.
None of that mattered however as she was able to come out on fire smashing Niculescu in the first set 6-1. She was ultra-aggressive as she normally is and she hit 19 winners in the set. Her opponent mustered only 4 and that proved the difference.
Niculescu held his own better in the 2nd set but the difference was still the difference in play. Sabalenka hit 29 winners in the 2nd but also committed 18 unforced errors which kept Niculescu in it. Due to so many mistakes, Sabalenka lost her serve twice in the 2nd set but still managed to win the 2nd set with 6-4.
A good start for Sabalenka who is in need of a great result at a major to build some confidence. Roland-Garros was hugely disappointing for her and she will look to do better at Wimbledon.
