Sabine Lisicki will return to the courts after giving birth to her daughter in September 2024. The former Wimbledon finalist has confirmed her participation in a new tournament, giving her another opportunity to resume her career.
At the end of January, during the Australian Open, it was announced that women's tennis would return to Calvià, Mallorca, with a WTA 125 event—equivalent to a Challenger on the men’s tour—set to be played on clay from October 6 to 12.
Injuries have plagued Lisicki’s career, preventing her from maintaining consistency at the highest level despite being considered one of the great talents on the WTA Tour more than a decade ago. Now 35, she hopes to give herself another shot at professional tennis.
“The women’s tournament that used to be held in Mallorca brings back great memories for me, and I’m delighted to return to the island with the newest member of my family,” Lisicki said in a video shown during the tournament’s presentation.
The former world No. 12 will compete in Mallorca, which previously hosted a WTA 250 event on grass from 2016 to 2019 before being discontinued in favor of a men’s grass-court tournament.
This time, Lisicki will make her return on clay, and Pilar Carbonell, director of e|motion Sports España, expressed the organization’s pride in this milestone: “This clay-court tournament will not only restore Mallorca’s rightful place in women's tennis but will also be a commitment to equality and an inspiration for future generations of athletes, especially young girls,” she stated.
This is the first tournament Lisicki has confirmed since giving birth to her daughter, Bella, in September 2024. However, she could potentially compete in another event before Mallorca, which is scheduled for October.
