Maria Sakkari and
Jelena Ostapenko clashed verbally early in the first set calling each other 'names' after which Sakkari smashed Ostapenko 6-4 6-2.
A very entertaining and wholesome tennis match happened in Ostrava today between Sakkari and Ostapenko. It delivered much more than it promised and it promised a lot. Ostapenko was not happy early in the match with some of the calls being made arguing they were wrong. She also questioned the electronic line calling system arguing that it was not good.
Sakkari was not impressed with that as she watched Ostapenko ask the umpire 'Can you call the manager, please?'
Eventually, the match resumed with Ostapenko still talking aloud which Sakkari did not appreciate ultimately firing back: "You’re seriously a fucking bit*h?"
Tensions were running high but we got on with the tennis and Sakkari proved better playing more consistently from the baseline. She won the opening set with 6-4. In the 2nd set, she continued playing well channelling her anger into something useful like hitting winners.
Ostapenko could not keep up with Sakkari and found herself down 1-4 rather quickly. From there it was a rather easy finish for Sakkari as Ostapenko was all over the place with her shots and in all fairness did not even try that hard. It wrapped up with 6-2 to Sakkari after which we saw a handshake.
