With defending champion Kiki Bertens, former champion Petra Kvitová and a host of other high-ranked players in the mix, the competition should be fierce as players look to build on their form after the year's first Grand Slam.
The sixth seeded Sakkari faces Russian Vitalia Diatchenko, a foe she has defeated in their two previous meetings. After a valiant run at the 2020 Australian Open, Sakkari will be looking to improve her performance this season.
Eighth seed Elena Rybakina squares off against Czech Katerina Siniakova. The unseeded Siniakova leads 2-1 in their career meetings, with all three encounters happening in 2019.
Russian Anastasia Potapova takes on compatriot Liudmila Samsonova. Both ladies battled through the qualifying rounds to reach the main draw, and neither will be willing to give up their spot. The 18-year old Potapova is in fact the youngest player in the singles main draw, which could perhaps leave her with more to prove.
