Maria Sakkari shut down talk about a supposed Netflix curse after succesfully booking a place in the third round of the
Australian Open.
Sakkari wasn't aware of the supposed Netflix curse that became a popular idea among tennis fans online. Several players that took part in the Netflix tennis series had some unfortunate things happen to them whether it be injury or an early loss at the event. Sakkari is among those that didn't as she booked a spot in the third round but she was asked about it after the match:
"Netflix curse? I have never heard that. I mean, the only one (loss) that I can think of is Matteo, but Matteo lost his match 7-6 on the fifth set. I have to say that they (the Break Point production team) only bring us luck and I enjoyed my time with them because they are nice people."
Sakkari did face stiff opposition from her opponent and for a time it looked like she was in danger of losing the match. Asked to judge her level after the match, Sakkari added:
"I know that I haven’t been playing my best tennis yet,
but it’s better to keep improving and keep the good part for the later
stages of the tournament."
