Already viewed as the Greatest of all time, there is another aspect of the game that shows how much of a dominant force Serena Williams has been during her tenure on the WTA circuit; her longevity.
The 23-time Grand Slam champion just missed out on another year-end Top 10 ranking, finishing the 2020 season as World No.11. Now 39 years of age, even more impressive is the fact that Williams turned pro in September 1995, a full 25 years ago.
Her inimitable career has transpired over four decades - the 90's, 00's, 10's and now 20's. To put it in perspective, 37 of the current Top 100 WTA players weren't even born when she played her first professional match in 1995. Furthermore, 98 of the current Top 100 had not played their first WTA match (the only exception being her elder sister, Venus Williams).
With relevance to pop culture, the hit song during her debut year was "You are not alone" by Michael Jackson. Furthermore, although Sony is just releasing their highly anticipated Playstation 5 gaming console, the original Playstation had just been released.
Although Serena has numerous accolades and trophies to her name, the fact that she maintains such a high level of tennis after competing for over two decades as a singles player is likely to be unsurpassed. There might be numerous multi-Grand Slam champions as the years go by, but there'll only ever be one Serena Williams.
