Former World No.1 Serena Williams will make her return to professional tennis at the Top Seed Open, the newest event on the WTA calendar.
The
Top Seed Open presented by Bluegrass Orthopaedics will take place in Lexington, Kentucky and is slated to begin on August 10. WTA CEO Steve Simon confirmed the addition of this event to the Tour's provisional calendar last week, along with the Prague Open in the Czech Republic.
However, Williams will not be the only Grand Slam champion competing at the event. 2017 US Open champion
Sloane Stephens was also announced as a participant. She is currently representing the
Chicago Smash at the
World Team Tennis exhibition event.
This will be Williams first event since she led Team USA to victory against Latvia during the
Fed Cup Qualifiers in February. The 23-time Grand Slam champion intends to chase her 24th Major title at the US Open, as
she has committed to competing in New York.
The Top Seed Open is scheduled to be held at the Top Seed Tennis Club from Aug. 10-17.
