Having already conquered the world of tennis and fashion,
Serena Williams is making the transition to the comic book industry as she makes her debut in a comic book series that will see her play the role of Wonder Woman.
During the launch of DirecTV Stream this summer, Williams played the role of Wonder Woman in a series of commercials that saw her don a retro-themed Wonder Woman costume. It has been confirmed that the 23-time Grand Slam champion will be returning to the role as Wondrous Serena, where she resumes her fight for justice.
The comic book will initially be released digitally over four chapters in October, with a follow-up print edition coming out in November. Written by Amanda Deibert (Sensation Comics) with art by Cat Staggs (Smallville, Crosswind), the story begins in our world but quickly sees Williams pulled into the multiverse.
The synopsis reads as follow - "Williams’ grand slam tournament takes an unexpected turn when an invasion by ball-launching robots called the Retrobots sees her using her skills as a tennis champion to protect innocent bystanders. Discovering a tear in the fabric of space through which the robots emerged, Williams comes face-to-face with the interdimensional Wondrous Serena. The two of them must team up to save both of their worlds by stopping the Retrobots from punishing innocent people across the multiverse for potential future crimes.”
The campaign will expand into social media with a Twitter emoji showing Wondrous Serena holding her golden tennis racket as well as a Snapchat AR Portal come Oct. 6th. The Snapchat feature will allow fans to replicate the comic book experience by entering the AR via posters designed by DC Comics artists. Stepping into the brightly colored ‘80s inspired world that serves as the spot’s backdrop, participants can join the battle against the Retrobots by teaming with Williams and Wonder Woman as part of an interactive game.
