Serena Williams won't compete at the 2022 Australian Open after the event announced her statement regarding the decision to pull out.
Serena Willimas won't be playing at the 2022 Australian Open which was confirmed by a statement released by the event from Williams. In the statement, Williams explained that her doctors have advised her against playing as she continues to battle injuries at this stage of her career. She said:
"Following the advice of my medical team, I have decided to withdraw from this year's Australian Open. While this is never an easy decision to make, I am not where I am physically to compete. Melbourne is one of my favorite cities to visit and I look forward to playing at the AO every year. I will miss seeing the fans but am excited to return and compete at my highest level."
The Australian Open captioned the Tweet with:
"All our love, Serena Williams. Come back stronge."
Williams gave a lengthy wave to the crowd last year after her semifinal loss to Naomi Osaka and her post-match conference was very emotional. The American was unsure whether she would ever play in Melbourne again but she also explained that she would never let anyone know when the final time was. With this development, it might have very well been the last time she ever played in the Rod Laver Arena.
