Paula Badosa was down 3-5 in the final set of the match against qualifier Elizabeth Mandlik but rallied to win the final one 7-6(5).
It was a very close encounter for Paula Badosa in San Jose as the Spaniard faced an American qualifier that is ranked outside of the top 200. Mandlik received a wild card into the qualifiers and fought her way into the main draw facing Badosa. The 21-year-old played some incredible tennis in this match and Badosa thought so too.
The Spaniard explained that she thought her level was pretty decent but her opponent was stunning:
"I think sometimes it's a little bit confusing when you play against a player with her ranking because sometimes you don't expect that kind of score and you think you're not doing things well. But to be honest, I think I played pretty good and she only played unbelievably and I have to accept it."
For now, Badosa remains in the draw but she will need to be careful moving forward as she proved to be quite beatable.
