Shelby Rogers stuns Sakkari with incredible performance in Adelaide

The day of upsets continued at the Adelaide International I, as third seed Maria Sakkari fell in three sets to an inspired Shelby Rogers.

Rogers upset the World No.6 in a 7-6(5) 2-6 6-4 victory on Center Court, improving her career record to 2-0 against the Greek star. With both ladies battling in a tightly contested first set that could have gone either way, the American proved to be the more poised of the two as some errant groundstrokes snuck into Sakkari's game in the deciding tiebreak.

Nonetheless, the third seed proved to be made of sterner stuff, as she dominated the second set, capitalizing on her opponent's failing serve. With the match tied at a set apiece, it was Rogers who took advantage of her break opportunities, converting on two of three break points. The World No.40 secured victory after a Sakkari backhand sailed long, booking her spot in the quarterfinals.

Rogers will face seventh seed Elena Rybakina, who defeated Czech Marie Bouzkova earlier in the day.
